Social Media, Whatsapp, Facebook, ELLT, Systematic ReviewAbstract
The aim of this systematic literature review is to present an overview of the state of the art of social media, more precisely WhatsApp and Facebook, as pedagogical tools to learn and teach the English language. In addition, this review also maps learners’ experiences of learning outcomes when they deal with English through WhatsApp and Facebook. To this end, 38 articles (2016-2020) retrieved from different databases were reviewed and analysed to highlight the foci in this field of research. The findings of this systematic review revealed that WhatsApp and Facebook enjoyed popularity in 2018 and 2019 among researchers and the number of studies also increased during these two years. Moreover, the most commonly adopted research methods were found to be mixed and quantitative ones. In the reviewed articles, writing was found to be the most common productive skill undertaken for research with undergraduates. Further analysis unfolded challenges, limitations and advantages of these social media tools. The study suggests some guidelines for future research related to the use of WhatsApp and Facebook as pedagogical tools to support English language learning and teaching (ELLT).
